In a year marked by extraordinary change, unrestricted, ready-to-use gifts became one of Cornell’s most vital resources.

Significant and unexpected cuts to federal research funding strained budgets in every college and school, impacting the work and experiences of faculty, researchers, and students. Donor generosity allowed university leaders to respond to emerging needs as Cornell adapted to shifting financial realities.

Cornell annual funds were essential to this story. They supported and bolstered critical research. They funded many transformative moments across students’ academic and extracurricular lives. And they helped keep Cornell affordable. Last year, like every year, annual fund donors enabled Cornellians from all walks of life to create a brighter future for themselves and for others worldwide.

Achieving new milestones

Despite a challenging year, Cornell's annual fund donors rallied to break fundraising records in 2024-2025. Together, they helped keep a Cornell education affordable and funded work that advances the public good in the U.S. and beyond.

Donors remained committed

Donors were unwavering in their support of Cornell throughout a challenging 2024-2025, with more than 41,500 1865 Society members keeping up their giving streak last year. In total, 71,603 donors made a gift to Cornell, and of them, about 57% designated their contributions to Cornell annual funds.

Why annual funds make a difference

Cornell annual funds help the university do the greatest possible good for Cornellians and for the world. They play a vital role in Cornell’s larger financial picture, supporting key priorities that:

How they make an impact

The power of Cornell annual funds isn’t just in what they support. These vital resources also give university leaders the ability to respond strategically to emerging and unexpected needs, whether it’s launching research that addresses global challenges or creating new opportunities for students. This flexibility, a defining feature of annual funds, proved invaluable during last year’s challenges and remains essential for Cornell’s future.

Lynden A. Archer, the Joseph Silbert Dean of Engineering and the James A. Friend Family Distinguished Professor in Engineering, emphasizes how annual funds allowed him to support faculty members whose federally funded research projects were halted by government stop-work orders in 2025.

“Cornell had a number of our faculty experience stop-work orders. In the college’s case, that number was pretty significant, and it impacted multiple members of our faculty,” he said. “The annual fund allowed the college, and, in particular, me, the flexibility to commit to those researchers.”

Keeping Cornell accessible

Donors make a Cornell education even more affordable. Dollars raised help support financial aid packages for students in every college and school. They fund undergraduate scholarships and Cornell grants—a type of Cornell-sponsored aid that does not need to be repaid. This support ensures more students graduate from Cornell with low or no debt.

Last year, 2,300 annual fund donors gave $1.36 million to Cornell annual funds for undergraduate scholarships. One hundred percent of these gifts fund financial aid packages.

Affordability at a glance

Cornell’s 2025-2026 tuition, housing, and dining rates are not the price financial aid-eligible undergraduates pay, thanks to Cornell grants and scholarships. These types of aid have almost doubled in the past decade, making Cornell affordable to more families today than ever before.

Borrowing decreased

Loan caps and expanded no-loan financial aid packages have helped decrease the total Cornell undergraduates who borrow by 40% since 2020.

Total dollars borrowed by undergraduates also decreased by 48% during this same period. Donors to annual funds and other areas of the university help lighten the loan burden for Cornell graduates.
